I guess fans could say “she gave it a try”–as Claressa Shields officially announced she will no longer be competing in Mixed Martial Arts during her recent interview with Ariel Helwani. The 2x Olympic Gold Medalist had tried MMA fighting with the Professional Fighters League and had mixed success. Unable to make the 155lbs weight limit for her last PFL MMA fight, and following a loss to Abby Montes–Many felt Claressa Shields lacked the discipline and commitment required to succeed at a high level in MMA.
Shields who started is a 4 weight division undisputed champion in the sport of Boxing where she once competed in a competitive weight category of 154lbs has now allowed herself to reach the Heavyweight category, and it has directly affected her ability to attract quality opponents with the division being very limited in talent.
While fans have asked for a Cris Cyborg Vs Claressa Shields fight one day, it now appears further than ever. Cyborg who had originally offered an open weight challenge to the self proclaimed “GWOAT” has moved up to the 154lbs boxing weight category and successfully found herself in the top 10 in the world rankings for that division, while Claressa has disappeared.
Citing “It was too hard” and “It took too much time commitment” as her reasons for quitting MMA, fans will never get to see Cris Cyborg X Claressa Shields inside of the cage it now appears.
