It appears Claressa Shields has announced her next boxing fight, and unfortunately for fight fans she is going to be staying in the Women’s Heavyweight division, a category with exactly 17 active professional fighters IN THE WORLD. Rather than working on her weight issues, Shields has decided to continue competing in the least competitive weight category in all of female combat sports.
Having struggled in her previous PFL MMA fight to make the contracted weight of 155lbs, Shields forced her opponent Kelsey DeSanti to accept a catchweight bout at 165 pounds the week of the fight or lose out on the opportunity to compete in Riyadh Saudi Arabia. Shields would go on to win that fight Via a controversial split decision against the previously 2-2 DeSanti.
Following that poor performance in MMA, Shields returned to “her sport” of Boxing where she faced Heavyweight Vanessa Lepage Joanisse who had a professional record of 7-1 and had retired from the sport of Boxing from 2017-2023. Shields fought an outmatched part time boxer in Joanisse to capture the Heavyweight belt.
While fans have been asking for Shields to hire a professional nutritionist and make a weight with more competitive matchups, it now appears that Shields is going to stay at Heavyweight despite the 30% bodyfat she is currently carrying at that weight to face the 42 year old Danielle Perkins who currently only has 5 professional boxing fights after taking up the sport of Boxing following a successful Basketball career. While no date has been announced, it is expected to take place in February in Shields hometown of Detroit Michigan.
