It appears that the UFC era of the ‘double champ’ is finally over as Zhang Weili has vacated her straw weight championships ahead of a fight with Valenitna Shevchenko where she will move up to the 125lbs flyweight division vacating her 115lbs UFC Championship belt in the process. Currently UFC 322 will also feature a Co main event of former UFC welterweight champion Leon Edwards as he takes on the surging Brazilian Carlos Prates.
UFC president Dana White announced the fight and that Zhang would be vacating her strawweight championship in an attempt to move up at take Valentina Shevchenko’s 125lbs championship belt. The bout which will take place NOv. 15th in New York at Madison Square Garden will be the Co main event alongside a welterweight championship fight of Jack della Maddalena against former lightweight champion Islam Makhachev who is also moving up in weight for a chance to become a two division champion.
Weili Zhang had told reporters she was hoping to move up to 125lbs after her win over Tatiana Suarez at UFC 312 following a two time championship rung with three title defenses in total. Valentina Shevchenko is one of the most dominant WMMA fighters of all time. Who do you think will win this fight? Cris Cyborg had this to say about the fight “This might be the biggest WMMA fight that can be made in the entire sport and I am excited to see my friend Valentina step back into the octagon and do what she does best. I expect her to show her dominance once again in New York.”
Do you think the UFC should still let fighters attempt to hold championships belts in two different weight classes at the same time or do you think it is best to make a fighter vacate a belt before challenging for a new championship weight class, allowing for the old division to continue growing without the need for an interim championship.
