Brazilian Thiago Santos came into the fight against David Branch having won 4 in a row- and was looking to get another victory that would put him into contention for a ranked opponent. With wins over Anthony Smith, Nate Marquardt, Elias Theodorou, and Steve Boss, the fight against David Branch was going to be another step towards the top.

Branch who came over to the UFC after success in World Series of Fighting won his Debut against Krysztof Jotko by split decision before moving up to face Luke Rockhold in his first main event with the promotion. Suffering a TKO loss to Luke Rockhold at UFC Fight Night 116 this was branch first fight back since Sept of 2017.
David Branch showed that he deserves to be a top 10 middleweight with his performance over the Brazilian fighter landing a clean strike that was right on the button and then followed it up with additional strikes on the ground to get the KO win in the first round.
