Canelo Alvarez is going to have some explaining to do ahead of his rematch with Gennandy Golovkin due to his recent positive test for the steroid clenbuterol.
GGG and Canelo are set to rematch Cinco De Mayo the 5th of May on HBO PPV inside the TMobile Arena in Las Vegas, after their last match was controversially ruled a DRAW following 12 rounds of action. At this time it is not known how the failed test will impact the Cinco De Mayo fight date.
Canelo who is currently in Guadalajara Mexico training for the fight was tested of Feb 17th and the 20th and during one of those tests is when the trace amounts of clenbuterol. Clenbuterol has been linked to several Mexican athletes in recent years due to the meat contamination issues in the country. Canelo immediately said meat contamination is also what has caused his positive test.
Canelo has said he will be moving his camp to San Diego to finish the fight ahead of May 5th training camp and that he will be available for additional VADA testing. Francisco Vargas and Erik Morales are two other Mexican boxers who have tested positive for clenbuterol in the past.
