Islam Makhachev kept the UFC Lightweight Championship, but as the seconds ticked the final moments of the 5th and final round it was Alexander Volkanovski who ended the fight in a dominant fashion as he had secured the takedown and top position on Makhachev who looked exhausted and was doing his best to make it to the closing bell of the fight.   While Volkanovski won 2 rounds on the judges scorecards, many in the Australian crowd felt their fighter had done enough after coming up from the lighter weight division to secure the win, and rained down boos from their seats as Islam staked “his claim” at being the top P4P fighter in the UFC.

Islam landed several solid combinations on the feet having no problem standing with the featherweight champion. The fight was the first time the UFC matched up the Pound for Pound #1 against the Pound for Pound #2 in  Men’s MMA however the promotion placed Cris Cyborg who was #1 in the world with a 14 year unbeaten streak against Amanda Nunes.

Following the fight, there have been some rumors that Islam Makhachev may have hired an Australian nurse to help administer an I.V. for re hydration.  UFC Veteran Dan Hooker took to his Twitter Monday morning to accuse the champ of cheating saying that he hired an Australian nurse to administer the IV fluids following a difficult weight cut which would be a violation of USADA and if proven could result in a suspension for Islam Makhachev.
