Perhaps the world would have never discovered the great Cris Cyborg if it wasn’t for boxing turned MMA promoter Gary Shaw who brought a young and talented Cris Cyborg from Brazil to fight in the USA for the first time in 2008 when the young Cyborg who only had a 4-1 record in the sport at the time went on to defeat future WWE and UFC star Shayna Baszler by TKO.
Following that win, Cyborg went on to establish herself as a promotional star with Elite XC before the company was eventually absorbed by Strikeforce in 20. 9. Elite XC went on to discover many of MMA’s stars including Kimbo Slice, Nick Diaz, Robbie Lawler, and more.
Gary Shaw officially promoted his final fight in 2015 and successfully promoted 175 events during a 13 year with is promotional company begining in Sept 2022 and ending in June 2015 with a fight between Miguel Cotto and Daniel Geale in Brooklyn.
Elite XC held 20 events from Feb 2007 to Oct. 2008. Cyborg had this to say about Gary Shaw, “He was a great promoter and the first to give me my opportunity in the USA, and for that I will always be thankful.”
Cyborg who is now entering her 19th year of professional fighting has transitioned from MMA into Boxing and will be competing April 27th in Green Bay Wisconsin as the main event of Green Bay Fight Night.
