
There might not be a better promoter of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu on earth than Craig Jones and what he has done with the CJI tournament. The first appearance gave away 2 million dollars to a single competitor, while Craig Jones offered a remake of the Quintet Grappling team concept in the 2nd edition of the CJI tournament with the winning team dividing a million dollar fight purse. With a lackluster first day in regards to actual submission, Craig Jones upped the antics by announcing every submission would award a 50,000$ bonus for the grapplers.
Bteam faced the Team Australasia and saw their star Victor Hugo earn a quick 100,000$ bonus by submitting Fabricio Andrey with a head and arm triangle followed by a second head an arm submission to earn him the double 50K bonuses. In a cross town rivalry the split team of New Wave earned their spot in the finals by beating team Americas after defeating Atos team the night prior. Luke Griffith earned a 50K bonus against Diego Pato while Felipe Pena got the submission back with a 50K bonus of his own by arm barring Luke Griffith. Giancarlo Bodoni secured the victory for New wave team with an armor over Ronaldo Junior.
The finals saw all 5 matches between New Wave and B team go the full time limit with New Wave winning 4 of the 5 matches however the finals match was won by a 10-8 round giving the overall score of the 5 rounds of action a 47-47 draw. Due to the rules of the tournament the finals match was to be considered the tiebreaker which resulted instead in Rodriguez defeating Griffith and giving the Bteam the 1 million dollar cash prize. It should be noted that the event sponsor awarded BOTH TEAMS a 1 million dollar cash prize based on the performances.
Helena Crevar earned a 100,000$ paycheck in a women’s 145lbs tournament defeated Sarah Galvao in the finals of the most expensive women’s grappling tournament in the history of the sport of submission grappling. Craig Jones was set to compete against Gable Stevenson however he pulled out of the match and was replaced by Chael Soennen in a friendly grappling exhibition won by Jones.
