When the greatest champions prepare for the biggest fights of their careers, they surround themselves with people who have already solved pieces of the puzzle.

That appears to be exactly what Cris Cyborg is doing as she prepares for her August 22 showdown against Ketlen Vieira at Professional Fighters League Tampa Bay. One of the most significant additions to Cyborg’s preparation is former UFC champion Holly Holm, a fighter uniquely qualified to help break down Vieira’s style after spending 25 minutes inside the cage with her.

A Championship Rivalry That Became Mutual Respect

Years ago, Cyborg and Holm produced one of the defining championship fights in women’s MMA history when they battled for the UFC Featherweight Championship over five grueling rounds. While they entered that contest as opponents, the respect forged during those 25 minutes eventually evolved into a strong professional relationship.

Today, the former rivals have become trusted training partners.

The relationship has been mutually beneficial.

Cyborg was part of Holm’s training camp ahead of her bout with Kayla Harrison at UFC 300, helping prepare the former champion for one of the division’s most physically demanding opponents.

Holm later returned the favor by joining Cyborg’s training camp before her victory over Larissa Pacheco, contributing to one of the biggest wins of Cyborg’s recent career.

Now, with Ketlen Vieira standing across the cage, Holm’s experience may prove even more valuable.

Nobody Knows Vieira Better Than Holly Holm

Holm challenged Vieira on May 21, 2022, in a five-round contest that remains one of the most debated decisions in recent women’s MMA. Although Vieira earned the split decision victory, the statistics tell a much different story. Holm accumulated 10 minutes and 3 seconds of control time, while Vieira managed only 1 minute and 24 seconds throughout the entire 25-minute fight: for a combined control time of 11:27.

Those numbers illustrate something important for Cyborg’s coaching staff.

Holm successfully neutralized much of Vieira’s judo and wrestling for extended stretches, forcing positions that limited Vieira’s opportunities. Few athletes have spent that much cage time working through Vieira’s clinch sequences, body locks, trips, and defensive reactions.

That experience cannot be replicated by film study alone.

Holm understands the timing of Vieira’s entries, the subtle adjustments she makes against the fence, how she reacts under pressure, and where openings begin to appear as rounds progress. Those details could become invaluable as Cyborg prepares her own game plan.

A Different Challenge Awaits Vieira

If there is one aspect of this matchup that should concern Vieira, it is the amount of firsthand information Cyborg now has available. Very few fighters enter a championship level contest with a trusted teammate who has already spent five full rounds exchanging every phase of MMA against the opponent.

Holm knows what worked. She knows what didn’t. She understands where Vieira is strongest, where she becomes vulnerable, and what adjustments she made throughout the fight. That type of insight is difficult to quantify but can dramatically influence a training camp. For Vieira, knowing that Cyborg has access to that level of experience adds another strategic layer to an already difficult assignment.

History Is Within Reach

The stakes extend well beyond another marquee victory. Cyborg enters the contest with an outstanding 29-2 professional record and an incredible 18-1 record in World Championship fights, one of the greatest championship résumés in mixed martial arts history. A victory over Vieira would elevate Cyborg to 30 professional MMA victories, making her the first woman in combat sports history to reach that milestone in professional mixed martial arts. It would also represent her 10th consecutive victory, extending a winning streak that has lasted since 2018.

For an athlete who has already captured world championships across multiple major organizations, another historic accomplishment remains within reach.

August 22 Could Add Another Chapter

Ketlen Vieira presents a legitimate challenge with her physicality, judo background, and grappling ability. But Cyborg enters the matchup with momentum, championship experience, and perhaps one of the most valuable scouting reports imaginable. When that report comes directly from Holly Holm: a former opponent, respected training partner, and the fighter who has already shared 25 minutes inside the cage with Vieira, it becomes more than historical footage.

It becomes preparation built from experience.

On August 22 at PFL Tampa Bay, Cyborg will attempt to make history once again. If she succeeds, she won’t simply earn another victory, she’ll become the first woman ever to record 30 professional MMA wins while continuing one of the most remarkable championship careers the sport has ever seen.
