As a fighter who’s been in this game for a long time, I’ve seen promoters come and go. But when real visionaries build something special, it leaves a mark. That’s why I’m genuinely excited about the news that longtime MMA matchmaker Rich Chou is returning to work with Scott Coker on his brand-new MMA promotion launching in 2027.

This isn’t just another organization entering the fray. It’s the reunion of a core team that helped shape modern MMA. Scott Coker, one of the best promoters of all time, is back with his trusted collaborators, and the industry should be paying attention.

Scott Coker: A True Pioneer

Scott Coker has a track record that speaks for itself. He founded Strikeforce, turning it from a regional kickboxing promotion into a legitimate global force that challenged the UFC. Under his leadership, Strikeforce delivered unforgettable fights and launched or elevated massive stars like Daniel Cormier, Gina Carano, Fedor Emelianenko, Nick Diaz, Gilbert Melendez, Ronda Rousey, and many more.

Later, as president of Bellator MMA, Coker oversaw a decade of growth, showcasing talent like Michael Chandler, Patricio Pitbull, Ryan Bader, and A.J. McKee while introducing innovative formats that kept fans engaged. He knows how to spot future champions, build compelling divisions, and create moments that resonate with audiences worldwide. Few promoters have his combination of experience, fighter respect, and business acumen.

Rich Chou Returns — And the Band Is Back Together

Rich Chou served as matchmaker under Coker in both Strikeforce and Bellator. His deep relationships across gyms, fight teams, and the fighter community made him invaluable. Now, he joins as Executive Vice President of Athlete Relations, where he’ll be central to competition strategy and building authentic connections with fighters.

This reunion feels like old times but with fresh energy. Coker is assembling a powerhouse executive team:

  • Kevin Kay (Chief Content Officer) — Former president of Paramount Network and Spike TV, with massive experience in combat sports broadcasting.
  • Tom Fox (Chief Operating Officer) — Background with Gatorade, NBA Properties, Arsenal, and Nike-level marketing expertise.
  • Paolo Boccotti (EVP, European Production & Operations) — Key figure in Bellator’s European expansion.
  • Lawrence Stuart (EVP, Media Rights & Business Development).
  • Chris DeBlasio (EVP, Global Head of Communications) — Veteran from Showtime Sports.

This isn’t a startup scrambling for talent and know-how. It’s a battle-tested group with proven relationships, production expertise, media savvy, and a deep love for the sport. They’re building something that honors MMA’s roots while pushing it forward.

Why This Matters: Real Competition for Fighters

The MMA landscape needs strong alternatives to the UFC. PFL has carved out its space with its unique format, but there’s room for another major player that prioritizes great matchmaking, fighter development, and exciting cards. Coker’s new promotion is backed by significant funding and this elite team  is positioned to instantly compete for that No. 2 spot.

Fighters deserve options. We want organizations that value us, create compelling matchups, and give platforms to rising stars alongside established names. With Rich Chou back handling athlete relations and Coker at the helm, this new league has the potential to deliver exactly that — super fights, smart tournaments, global reach, and a fighter-first mentality.

I’m excited to see what they build. The return of this core team isn’t just nostalgia; it’s a signal that MMA is getting stronger and more competitive. Fighters win when there are more high-quality opportunities, and fans win when there are more quality shows to watch.
