There aren’t many times when a fight has been canceled closer to the fight than what the UFC experienced with Maycee Barber as she was forced to withdraw from her UFC on ESPN 68 main event against Erin Blanchfield. With less than 30 minutes before her walk time, Barber was sent to the hospital after not being medically cleared to compete and the fight being canceled.
Full details of what exactly happened is still trying to be discovered, as she was officially checked out of the hospital on Monday. Speaking to ESPN Maycee Barber said “We’re not entirely sure what happened. Obviously there was a medical emergency. We’re not quite sure exactly what it was, what it is, but there was something that happened, and I don’t exactly remember everything, but there was an event that happened in the back when I was warming up, and the doctor, the commissioners, like everybody saw it. The commissioners were asking me if I was OK and I was saying that I was, and they didn’t think that I was.”
The Ultimate Fighting Championship UFC is the premier organization when it comes to fighter safety and the bout was called off despite it being the only bout remaining on the fight card and the main event of the ESPN broadcast. Barber went on to say that the UFC is helping her find the best doctors and specialist and is trying to help her get to the bottom of what happened to her.
