The debut of Olympic Gold Medal wrestler Gable Stevenson went about as perfect as you can plan as the world champion wrestler made his professional MMA debut at LFA 217 defeating Braden Peterson with a vicious 1st round stoppage with brutal ground and pound strikes after a highlight takedown started the action.
Stevenson is one of the most hyped prospects in the sport having won 2 NCAA Division 1 National Championships representing the university of Minnesota in addition to his 202 Olympic Gold Medal which made him the youngest super heavyweight champion in Olympic history. As one of only 6 collegiate wrestlers to win the Dan Hodge Trophy more than once, he is the only one who has been able to do it at Heavyweight.
Within the first opening seconds of the fight Peterson found himself taken down by Gable Stevenson who swarmed the position with heavy strikes while standing over his opponent in the mounted position. Stevenson took the long route to MMA first signing a contract with the WWE before trying to make it into the NFL before eventually returning back to Minnesota only to suffer one of the biggest upsets in NCAA history.
Stevenson a training partner of Jon Jones wasted no time putting up his first victory, it will be interesting to see what his future holds in the sport of MMA. 17x MMA champion Cris Cyborg had this to say about the fights LFA debut, “Gable Stevenson is a once in a generation wrestler, he looked amazing tonight, I’m excited to see him continue to grow and evolve as a fighter!”
