Fabricio Werdum is a former UFC Heavyweight world champion who after back to back wins in 2017 was looking to earn another chance at the Heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic. In order to do that Fabricio Werdum made a return to the cage after beating Marcin Tybura via decision at UFC Fight Night 121 in Australia against Alexander Volkov at UFC Fight Night 127 inside the O2 Arena in London England.
In the first round Werdum was able to get the fight to the floor where the BJJ Black Belt and ADCC champion had a huge advantage according to most fight analysts. Volkov was able to get the fight back to the feet, however Werdum continued to use his plan of putting the Russian opponent onto his back taking the fight to the floor.
Round 2 Werdum was able to get the floor back to the mat and use his BJJ to real push the Ground and Pound and show that he had great dominate position. Round 3 however Werdum didn’t attempt to get the fight to the floor with the same precision and after bloodied nose both fighters began to throw heavy leather as the bell ended.
Unfortunately in the 4th round Werdum showed less cardio conditioning than in the earlier rounds and Volkov started to take over with more pressure in the standup, eventually getting the KO victory in the 4th round. Volkov a former Bellator Fighter with losses to Cheick Kongo and Tony Johnson has now won 6 in a row including victories over Roy Nelson, Stefan Struve, and Fabricio Werdum inside the UFC promotion.
