It takes a pioneer, someone with a strong spirit and a will to get things done their way to create change sometimes. The sport of Boxing seems to have found that pionneer in Puerto Rican boxer Amanda Serrano.
Following her impressive victory over Brazilian Danila Ramos in Oct where she defended the WBA, IBF, and WBO Featherweight titles but did not defend her WBC belt who refused to sanction the bout due to Serrano contesting 12 rounds of 3 minutes for her fight instead of the traditional 10 rounds of 2 minutes reserved only for women in professional boxing. With the decision Amanda elected to compete on stage for the same amount of time given to Men World Champions to compete on stage.
Following the fight Amanda Serrano has now vacated her WBC belt stating, “Moving forward if a sanctioning body doesn’t want to give me and my fellow fighters the choice to fight the same as the men, then I will not be fighting for that sanctioning body.:
Cyborg who is making her return to the Boxing Ring Jan. 19th will be fighting 6 rounds of 2 minutes had this to say about Amanda’s decision, “Amanda is such a strong example for young women on what it means to be a World Champion. She is a true pioneer for ladies boxing and I love seeing her continue to champion for equal rights, equal opportunities, and equal pay. I support Serrano and her team.”
When asked why she will only be fighting 2 minute rounds during her boxing fight, Cyborg went on to say, “This is a new sport for me. Fighters like Serrano have had and done everything at the professional level already. For me I did not have any amateur boxing fights. There are so many differences from MMA and Muay Thai when you compare them to Boxing. As a fighter I know I am still learning and growing in the sport of Boxing. I am sure eventually in my career I will feel ready to challenge myself to 3 minute rounds once I have gained some more experience in the sport of Boxing.”
