Kevin Lee entered into the fight -145 betting favorite, even though he missed the contracted 156lbs weight limit. With a loss against Tony Ferguson the former Interim Champion at UFC 216, Lee was looking to get back to his winning ways in this fight, in an effort to get closer to a fight with now UFC champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Barboza who faced khabib at UFC 219 alongside the Cris Cyborg Vs Holly Holm fight card had won 3 fights in a row leading up to the bout with #1 contender at the time, eventual champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. With wins over Beneil Dariush, Gilbert Melendez, and Anthony Pettis the last loss before that run was Interim Champion Tony Ferguson.
in the first round Kevin Lee who missed weight for the fight was the bigger more explosive fighter and was able to use position to establish the takedown, and advance position to secure the mount and inflict a lot of damage in the process. Round 2 saw Kevin Lee land a huge body shot before getting anther takedown and bringing the fight to the mat. In round 3 Edson Barboza landed a perfectly timed spinning back kick that rocked Kevin Lee however lee was able to secure a takedown. At the end of the round Lee was heard asking his corner if it was round 4 or 5 visibly still recovering from the strikes. The fight was stopped in the 5th and final round when the ref looked at the cuts and damage done to Barboza
