California State Athletic Commission perhaps the most powerful athletic commission in the USA held a public hearing regarding a notice of intent to create the Muhammad Ali American Boxing Revival Act (H.R. 4624) which essentially removes the original Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act and would provide for a new avenue for boxing promoters to promote events in the future. Already submitted by Shanice Davids of Kansas and Brian Jack of Georgia to the House of Representatives the CSAC held an open floor to the public prior to making their own discussions and vote.
WWE President Nick Khan, UFC Hall of Fame Forrest Griffin and legendary MMA ref Big John McCarthy all took turns saying that they are in favor of reworking the Ali Act with no active boxer speaking about how the changes could affect their futures. Many boxers have always operated under the protection of the Ali Act which leads people to believe that most are unaware of how the changes will affect them.
Proponents of the changes argued that a moved like this for Boxing would move towards a UFC type of pay structure and take away several protections that athletes receive against predatory promotions. Allowing the organization to own it’s own belts and ranking system while being allowed to decide it’s own pay structure could place a monopoly on the trade and start some type of Anti Competitive practice in the sport of Boxing.
Moving forward it appears as if the Muhammad Ali American Boxing revival act is just a formality at this point after receiving the 6-0 vote of support from the California State Athletic Commission. With Zuffa Boxing having already successfully promoted Canelo Alvarez against Terence Crawford under the sports current governing ruleset do you feel that a new law is needed to improve boxing?
