Cris Cyborg overcame a seven-year age disadvantage, an opponent who missed weight by more than seven pounds, and now a confirmed positive steroid test to secure her historic 30th professional MMA victory.

What was already an impressive performance by MMA legend Cris Cyborg at PFL Tampa on August 22, 2026, has taken on even greater significance following the revelation that her opponent, former UFC contender Ketlen Vieira, tested positive for a prohibited steroidal substance following their five-round fight.

According to an exclusive report published by Sherdog on October 13, Vieira has received a six-month suspension after both her A and B drug-testing samples returned adverse analytical findings for a steroidal substance prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

The news adds another remarkable layer to Cyborg’s unanimous decision victory, in which the 41-year-old Brazilian defeated a 34-year-old opponent who had already failed to make the contracted featherweight limit by more than seven pounds.

Despite those circumstances, Cyborg dominated much of the 25-minute contest, earning 49-46 scorecards from all three judges and securing her historic 30th professional MMA victory.

Seven Years Older, Seven Pounds Lighter, and Still Victorious

Heading into PFL Tampa, Cyborg was already facing a dangerous challenge against Vieira, a former top-three-ranked UFC bantamweight contender with victories over established names including Holly Holm, Miesha Tate, Cat Zingano, and Sara McMann.

Vieira, seven years younger than Cyborg, was expected to challenge for the PFL Women’s Featherweight World Championship.

However, the championship matchup was thrown into uncertainty when Vieira weighed in at 152.2 pounds, more than seven pounds above the 145-pound featherweight limit.

Cyborg successfully made championship weight but agreed to proceed with the fight despite her opponent’s significant weight advantage. Vieira’s failure to make weight meant the bout would become a non-title contest.

For Cyborg, accepting the fight meant risking her winning streak and professional legacy against an opponent who had failed to fulfill the contracted weight requirement.

What Cyborg did not know at the time was that Vieira would subsequently return a positive test for a prohibited steroidal substance.

Cyborg’s Technical Dominance Tells the Story

While Cyborg has built her reputation as one of the most devastating knockout artists in women’s MMA history, her performance against Vieira demonstrated another dimension of her championship abilities.

Rather than relying exclusively on power, Cyborg utilized footwork, distance management, accurate striking, and veteran fight intelligence to control the contest.

Unofficial fight statistics highlighted her striking efficiency, with Cyborg landing 119 of 159 significant strike attempts, compared to Vieira’s 73 landed strikes from 175 attempts.

That represented approximately 75% striking accuracy for Cyborg compared to just 42% for Vieira.

The difference was particularly noticeable in Cyborg’s ability to manage distance and establish her kicking game, preventing Vieira from consistently implementing her preferred offense.

All three judges awarded Cyborg four of the five rounds, producing identical 49-46 scorecards.

Considering the seven-year age gap, Vieira’s substantial weight miss, and the subsequently confirmed positive drug test, the performance stands out as one of the more remarkable demonstrations of longevity and technical superiority in Cyborg’s career.

Ketlen Vieira Suspended After Positive Steroid Test

According to Sherdog’s reporting, Mike Mazzulli, director of the Mohegan Tribe Department of Athletic Regulation, confirmed that both samples collected from Vieira returned the same adverse analytical finding.

The specific prohibited substance was not publicly identified. (A source close to the situation has revealed it to be Norandrosterone)

Vieira received a six-month suspension retroactive to August 22, making her eligible to return to competition on March 22, 2027.

In a statement provided to MMA Fighting, Vieira explained that she had undergone medical treatment for a longstanding knee injury after leaving the UFC.

Vieira maintained that the medication was discontinued once she signed with the PFL and denied intentionally attempting to gain a competitive advantage.

Regardless of intent, the positive result and subsequent suspension have renewed attention on the circumstances Cyborg faced entering the matchup.

Cris Cyborg Responds to Failed Drug Test With Class and Accountability

Following the announcement, Cyborg addressed the situation through her official Instagram account, emphasizing the importance of independent drug testing while acknowledging her own history with anti-doping enforcement.

“I want to take a moment to thank Mike Mazzulli and the athletic commission for taking drug testing seriously and holding fighters to a high standard,” Cyborg wrote.

The five-promotion world champion also addressed her own 2011 suspension, acknowledging that she accepted responsibility and made changes to her approach to supplements and team management.

In comments reported by Sherdog, Cyborg emphasized that her experience strengthened her belief in independent testing.

“That is why I believe strict, independent testing is important,” Cyborg said.

Rather than personally attacking Vieira, Cyborg expressed respect for her fellow Brazilian and acknowledged the difficulties fighters can encounter during training camps.

Her response reflects the perspective of an athlete who has spent more than two decades competing at the highest levels of professional mixed martial arts.

Historic 30th MMA Victory Strengthens Cyborg’s Legacy

The victory over Vieira improved Cyborg’s professional MMA record to 30-2, extending a remarkable period of dominance that has seen her remain undefeated in MMA for nearly eight years.

Already the only fighter to capture major women’s featherweight championships in Strikeforce, Invicta FC, UFC, Bellator, and PFL, Cyborg has established a championship résumé unmatched across five major MMA organizations.

Her victory over Vieira also represented her 19th world championship fight victory, further strengthening her place among combat sports’ most accomplished champions.

At 41 years old, Cyborg continues to compete against elite opponents from a younger generation while demonstrating that technical development, preparation, and fight intelligence can extend an athlete’s championship-level performance.

The Vieira fight may ultimately become one of the most revealing examples of that evolution.

Against a younger, heavier opponent who subsequently tested positive for a prohibited steroidal substance, Cyborg didn’t merely survive the matchup.

She won four of five rounds on every judges’ scorecard.

Does Cyborg’s Victory Deserve Even More Recognition?

When Cyborg defeated Vieira in August, the result was celebrated as her historic 30th professional MMA victory.

Nearly two months later, the circumstances surrounding that win have changed how the performance can be evaluated.

The combination of the age difference, substantial weight miss, and confirmed anti-doping violation makes Cyborg’s decisive victory particularly noteworthy.

Although the positive test does not establish precisely what competitive advantage, if any, the prohibited substance provided during the fight, it does confirm that Cyborg competed against an opponent who violated anti-doping rules.

For a fighter entering her third decade of professional MMA competition, winning under those circumstances reinforces an extraordinary legacy.

Cris Cyborg has spent more than 21 years proving she belongs among the greatest fighters in women’s MMA history. Her performance against Ketlen Vieira offers another compelling reason why.
